The importance of educating, understanding, and informing yourself to optimizing support
Understanding and informing yourself on the learning disability you or your loved one is struggling with is very beneficial in optimizing support. Educating yourself and those closest to you on your disability allows for proper support because people know what to do to help. It can also help you adjust and develop practices that may stop your learning disability from impeding on your daily life.
“Clinical observations suggest that both children and adults are more likely to experience academic success and emotional growth when they can better understand and interpret factors related to their learning disability” (Rothman & Cosden, 1995).
Doing your research on learning disabilities can also help you identify if you or a loved one may have one, before it significantly disrupts daily activities like school. For example, learning and attention issues may look like laziness or lack of intelligence. With the right support and resources, however, children can achieve at high levels. Staying informed and aware are key to less stigma and high expectations. Informing yourself on learning disabilities will also benefit you because it will help you understand how common learning disabilities are in children today. You will be able to provide better support, and your loved one will feel more supported.
